Utility & Service Locating

Identify and map underground utilities before excavation, trenching or drilling to reduce strikes, delays and costly damage.

BWize field technician locating underground utilities on a civil project

Clear information.
Practical execution.

Excavation without reliable service information can expose people, programs and critical infrastructure to unnecessary risk. BWize uses complementary locating methods to investigate buried services and help teams plan with greater confidence.

Ground Penetrating Radar and electromagnetic detection can be used to trace and mark utilities such as water, gas, sewer, stormwater, electrical and telecommunications infrastructure. We interpret the available evidence, explain limitations and provide practical information for the proposed work.

Plans and records are a useful starting point, but field locating helps reconcile them with visible site features and current ground conditions before excavation begins.

Where this service helps.

  • Excavation and trenching preparation
  • Directional drilling and civil works
  • Water, gas and drainage location
  • Electrical and telecommunications tracing
  • Site redevelopment and renovation planning
  • Public-asset and facilities investigations

What your team gains.

  • Reduced likelihood of service strikes and unplanned outages
  • Multiple technologies selected to suit site conditions
  • Clear on-site marking and reporting options
  • Better planning for excavation and construction teams
  • Experienced support for complex or congested sites

A considered path
from scope to outcome.

Every site is different. We confirm the requirement, choose a suitable method and keep the people relying on our work informed.

01

Review available information

We discuss the excavation scope and consider plans, visible infrastructure, access and known service records.

02

Detect and trace

GPR and electromagnetic equipment are used as appropriate to locate and follow subsurface features.

03

Mark and explain

Findings are marked and communicated with relevant depths, confidence and limitations so the team can plan the next step.

Useful information
for the next decision.

  • Detected routes marked clearly on site
  • Indicative depths and confidence explained where available
  • Photographs, sketches or reporting included to the agreed scope
  • Known limitations and recommended verification steps recorded

Questions about
utility & service locating.

Scope, access and site conditions can change the right approach. These answers are a useful starting point before we review your project.

Are utility plans enough before excavation?

Plans are important but may be incomplete, outdated or not sufficiently precise for the proposed work. Field locating provides another layer of evidence and should be combined with site procedures and safe excavation practices.

Which locating methods do you use?

We use Ground Penetrating Radar and electromagnetic locating as appropriate. The best method depends on service material, access, ground conditions, congestion and available connection points.

Can every underground service be found?

No locating method can guarantee detection of every service. We communicate confidence, limitations and areas where potholing or another verification method should be considered.
